Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air to warm your radiators, underfloor heating or hot water. Ground source systems use buried pipework to extract heat from the ground instead. Both need electricity to run, but draw on a naturally replenished heat source. Eligible homeowners replacing a fossil fuel system may be able to claim a £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme voucher towards the cost of a heat pump installation.
Solar thermal panels collect sunlight through glazed roof panels and transfer the heat to your hot water cylinder, reducing how hard your boiler has to work. They perform best in sunny weather and are usually paired with a backup heating source for year-round hot water, with low running and maintenance costs.
Biomass boilers burn wood pellets, chips or logs to provide central heating and hot water. Because the carbon released roughly matches what the fuel absorbed while growing, biomass is considered carbon-neutral. These systems need dedicated fuel storage, a suitable flue and regular ash removal.
